What Happened?
Created in 1997 by Canadian art student Deidre LaCarte as a personal webpage experiment, Hampster Dance featured rows of animated dancing hamsters accompanied by an endlessly looping tune. It quickly spread through email, bookmarks, and word of mouth.
Why Did It Win the Internet?
It was delightfully pointless. There was no product, no agenda, and no explanation—just something so absurdly cheerful that people couldn’t resist sharing it.
Why Did It Matter?
Hampster Dance became one of the earliest examples of viral web culture and demonstrated that ordinary people could create content capable of reaching millions.
